Connecting with the real world, one online session at a time!
Online tutoring and sessions for students in WA, ME, and GA.
Online tutoring for homeschoolers (or after school participants) has never been this fun! Sessions include connections with Georgia, Washington, and Maine state learning standards, while exploring the natural world and our connections to the places where we live and work.
Are you unable to make it to Sweet Tomatoes Learning Center in person, but want to participate in our nature-based learning projects and social studies tutoring experiences? Well, we have an option for YOU!
Students sign up for multiple hybrid sessions, which include learning opportunities through Zoom and additional activities they do outside of the Zoom meetings. Sessions are online, grouped with other participants who are also excited about the topics, adding socialization and friendship experiences as we all learn and achieve.
Social Studies topics are thematic, covering (& usually exceeding) state standards regarding social studies concepts and skills including:
-maps, globes, and charts with interpretation of legends
-chronological organization of events and eras
-historical events during different times and locations around the world
-comparisons between international and United States events
-impacts of climate, natural resources, pollution, and other issues across cultures and nations
-using primary and secondary sources
-evaluating what we read for consistency of information, adequacy/relevancy, and conflicts of interest
-understanding fact vs. opinion and problems/alternate solutions
-studying specific types of social studies content, including anthropology, financial literacy/economics, behavioral science, US History, World History, and Geography
SPECIAL NEEDS
Sweet Tomatoes Learning Center provides education for students who range in abilities and interests. Students needing accommodations in a typical "brick and mortar" classroom are often pleasantly surprised with how the flexible online tutoring environment meets their needs. If your student needs additional accommodations, please let us know.
Our tutoring sessions are scaffolded so all learners can learn and achieve at their own rate. We understand that reading and writing may be challenging to some, and others may struggle with mathematical concepts. Our goal is to meet our students where they are at, and expand their knowledge and their love for learning. If your child has special needs that need additional attention or support, please let us know so we can see how we can help them grow.
GIFTED SERVICES
Teacher Kathleen Reed is (or has been) certified as a provider of gifted education in multiple states including WA, GA, ME, and FL.
Most states recognize that gifted students are defined as those who demonstrate a high degree of intellectual and/or creative abilities, exhibit an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excel in specific academic fields, and need special instruction and/or special services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities.
Gifted Education is embedded in all of our tutoring sessions by way of offering students individualized ways to expand their learning through depth or breadth. Students will have opportunities to mingle with other bright students who may or may not be formally identified as gifted through state testing, but who are excited about learning and may have a need for extensions of projects or deeper discussions about the topics.
GOAL SETTING
The input of parents, students, and the teacher/tutor, as well as information from other sources (report cards, evaluations, etc.) will be considered while setting goals for the student for each set of tutoring courses in which they enroll.
